AYMARA TREKKER

"I would recommend this trip without hesitation, the mountains are beautiful, the local people are great. I`ve taken at least 100 pictures ..."
Mark A.

Bolivian Journeys. Our Aymara Trekker trip focuses on climbing Huayna Potosi 19,968ft (6,088m), and visiting the Cordillera Real region. We begin our program with a hike into the beautiful Chiarkhota Lake District. This trek is a genuine classic, keeping to high trails and crossing 3 passes over 16,728ft (5,100m). Our route provides a great diversity of scenery, including lovely alpine valleys with picturesque lakes, snow-capped peaks and scattered Aymara Indian villages. The rewards of this hike are numerous and incluce incredible solitude, beautiful natural phenonmena and very rewarding cultural interactions. This is the most beautiful treking region in the Bolivian Mountains. We finally move on to our climb of Huayna Potosi, this incredible mountain may very well be the most accessible 6,000 meter peak in the world. Our reward is a spectacular view of the entire Cordillera Real mountain range laid out below us.

ITINERARY:

Day 1. We depart LaPaz in the morning bound for trailhead at 4,500m (14,760ft). The drive in takes us across the broad and expansive high altiplano, passing the original sight of the city of La Paz. Free afternoon to explore the area.

Day 2. Today we meet our team of ¨arrieros¨ (muleteers) and we will begin the trek to discover the south west side of the Cordillera Real. We will cross a first pass at 4,800m (15,744ft) before crossing a swamp area in the vicinities of our next camp.

Day 3. We begin our day walking through the foothills of the mountain. We will cross a second pass located at 4,900m (16,072ft) before arriving to a beautiful colorful lake. We will begin the ascent up a steep slope to reach a glacier, a jewel located at the foot of big mountain. We cross a third pass at 5,100m (16,728ft) before descending again to 4,650m (15,252ft).

Day 4. After a hardy breakfast, we slowly work our way up toward our next pass at 5,000m (16,400ft) where you will see the Huayna Potosi and the Condoriri group mountains, and after crossing a number of silt laden streams arrive at Maria LLoco. We make camp right in front of the impressive Huayna Potosi´s west face; great photographic opportunities.

Day 5. We begin our trek moving up and out of Maria Lloco valley on a steep trail for the last pass at 5,100m (16,728ft) next to the Huayna Potosi mountain 6,088m (19,968ft). In the afternoon arrive to Laguna Milluni.

Day 6. A short 3 hours hike to High Camp 5,300 m (17,384 ft). We have the whole afternoon to "rest", at this altitude you should drink as much as you can, digestion works very slowly, so don't eat so much. A good advice "try to sleep".

Day 7. Early wake up as our ascent can take up to 6 hours. Setting off from that camp with sunrise over the Amazon Basin to our east, we climb a beautiful route which includes serious glacier travel and intermittent sections of moderately steep ground - challenging climbing. With Huayna Potosi's summit a well-defined point at the end of a beautifully sculptured ridge, the last few steps to the top provide an exhilarating finish to a great climb. Around 8:00 am, on the summit already, you'll be rewarded with beautiful views of Lake Titikaka, the Amazon basin, and the Cordillera Real. Two hours descent to high camp, and one more to base camp. Finally after a short drive you'll be in La Paz around 16:00.
